When Jesus came to this earth, he certainly had his death in mind for his mission. But his life is much more than simply his death. I would not dare attempt to take away from the meaning of his death, but Scripture devotes the majority of the Gospels are devoted to his life.

He said in John 10:10, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

Therefore he came to show us how to live. He came into a dark world and showed the world how to live by being a light.

Jesus was “the true light, which gives light to everyone…” (John 1:9). In another place Jesus stated, ““I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).

Now here’s the really powerful news: We can be the light of the world too.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).

Ask yourself today, have you been living in this light?

Do the people you work with know you are a Christian? Would they be surprised if they found out you were?

In what ways can you spread light today? Could you write an encouraging card to a discouraged brother or sister? Could you pay a visit to someone in the hospital? Could you buy a friend or co-worker’s lunch for them? Could you leave a candy bar with an invitation to church on their desk?

You are the light of the world. Let us wear that title with pride and live with light and joy.
