During recent years of social media Facebook has become a very popular and even a useful means to communicate and transmit information very rapidly and to many people. Facebook is a place where people talk about things that are important to them such as their faith, family, and work. It is a place where the insignificant, fun, and serious are also discussed, from political views to “I am at McDonald’s in Pit Stop, Kentucky drinking a cup of coffee”. One thing that many do is to share something good that has happened in their life so that others can rejoice with them. It is great to be able to read of the positive when the world is filled with negative and discouraging news. Sometimes after writing about a blessing that has come to their life they will also write the phrase: “God is good”. God should receive the glory for the good that happens because “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above…” (James 1:17). It is true that God is good and correct that he deserves the honor and glory for the good, however, when was the last time that you saw someone write about their pain, a problem, a struggle in life and after write, “God is good”? I don’t remember ever seeing it. However, the truth is that God is always good and even in the struggles of life.
The Bible itself says that God is good; “For the Lord is good, his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endures to all generations” (Psalm 100:5). The Psalmist presents two spiritual reason that indicate the goodness of God. First, he says that God is good because of his great mercy. Sometimes human beings think that God is hard and difficult towards man, but that is not true. The great mercy of God is the evidence that God does care, takes care of us, loves us, and is always ready to forgive us. God is good. Second, the Palmist says that God is good because his truth always exists and will endure. We can trust in the truth of God and as Jesus said; “Your word is truth” (Juan 17:17). The Psalmist also wrote; “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! For his mercy endures forever” (Psalm 136:1). God is good because of his great mercy and because of that he deserves to receive our thanksgiving and praise.
God is always good even though we experience difficult and negative situations in our lives. There is the temptation to only recognize that God is God when all is going well, but the true and faithful Christian will always be able to acknowledge the kindness and goodness of God. “And we know that all thins work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). Let us recognize that God is always good as we are beneficiaries of his blessings and when we face the struggles of life in this world.
