The wise man wrote “Go to the ant…consider her ways…provides her supplies in the summer and gathers her food in the harvest” (Proverbs 6:8). This proverb teaches some earthly and spiritual lessons for the child of God.
First, the wise man is teaching that there are seasons in the earthly life and in the spiritual life. In the earthly life one has to plant the seed in the spring, in the summer cultivate the plant, and in the fall harvest the fruit. Each season has its responsibilities for the human being and the wise man wrote about this fact. Just as it is true in the physical life it is also true in the spiritual life that there are seasons. After being baptized, the new Christian is a babe in Christ, spiritually speaking. Peter wrote “Like newborn babies, long for unadulterated spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow unto salvation” (1 Peter 2:2). Just as the baby desires and drinks the milk to grow physically, the new Christian has to drink the milk of the Word of God to grow spiritually. Part of spiritual growth is having a growing knowledge of God's Word, sound doctrine, and putting into practice what one has learned. There is a season for drinking the spiritual milk, to mature spiritually, and then to go forward fulfilling the will of God. Jude wrote to the brethren "Beloved while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith…”
Second, the wise man is teaching that one must prepare for the spiritual harvest. Autumn is going to come to the life of each one and after autumn comes winter when there is death. Winter comes and the grass, the trees, the flowers, and what is there do not produce. The Christian must prepare himself for spiritual winter, or that is, death. Jesus went to prepare a place for the saved (John 14:1-4) and the saved must prepare in order to go to the prepared place. The first step is to obey the gospel (believe, repent, confess faith in Jesus, and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins), and after doing so, the second step is to live the Christian life faithfully to God according to His Word (1 John 1 :7-9). Let us do what is necessary to prepare for the harvest.
