One of the most precious things God has given us is our attention.

We often think of our money, time, or talents as resources entrusted to us by God. But attention may be even more fundamental. Wherever our attention goes, our lives tend to follow. Related is Jesus's enigmatic statement, "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21). The heart follows what we continually focus on.

Every day, countless voices compete for our attention. News headlines demand it. Advertisements purchase it. Social media platforms are built around capturing it. We live in an age where distraction is abundant and sustained attention is increasingly rare.

Yet throughout Scripture, God repeatedly calls His people to pay attention.

"Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).

"Set your minds on things above" (Colossians 3:2).

"Consider Jesus" (Hebrews 3:1).

Notice that these commands are not primarily about doing more. They are about seeing differently. They are invitations to direct our attention toward God.

The challenge for many Christians is not outright rebellion but gradual distraction. Rarely do we wake up and decide to abandon our faith. More often, our hearts drift one small distraction at a time until the voice of God becomes harder to hear amid all the noise.

Perhaps the most spiritual thing some of us could do this week is simply pay attention.

  • Pay attention to the goodness of God in an ordinary day.
  • Pay attention to the needs of a neighbor.
  • Pay attention during prayer instead of rushing through it.
  • Pay attention to the words of Scripture.
  • Pay attention to Jesus.

After all, discipleship begins not merely with believing in Christ, but with noticing Him.
